Level-coil, also called pitch-buttock, is an old English party game traditionally played at Christmas gatherings. In the game, one player occupies a seat and the other players try to force that player out of it and take the seat for themselves, often through boisterous shoving and horseplay, so that possession of the seat passes from player to player over the course of the game. The name is thought to derive from the French leve-cul, literally lift the buttocks, describing the act of being pushed up out of the seat. The game was noted in early English writing as a raucous, physical amusement associated with seasonal festivities rather than a game of skill or strategy, and it survives today chiefly as a historical curiosity documented in accounts of traditional English party games.
