Picture the Impossible

Party and Word Games

Picture the Impossible was an alternate reality game developed jointly by the Lab for Social Computing at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper. It was a community-based game that let players learn about and explore the city of Rochester, New York, and a collaborative design team led by Elizabeth Lawley of the institute and Traci Bauer of the newspaper built it. The game ran from 12 September to 31 October 2009 with approximately 2,500 participants, who were split into three factions, each representing a different charity. The Forge, tied to Foodlink, focused on solving puzzles and deciphering coded documents. The Watch, tied to Wilson Commencement Park, focused on decrypting the narrative and discovering in-game secrets. The Tree, tied to Golisano Children's Hospital, focused on solving puzzles. A gala on 31 October 2009 celebrated the top 150 point scorers, and thirteen players tied for first place after obtaining every in-game achievement.
