Quiz

A quiz is a form of mind sport in which participants attempt to answer questions correctly across one or several subject areas. Quizzes serve several purposes: as a brief assessment tool in classrooms and training programs to measure growth in knowledge and skills, as a competitive pastime among hobbyists, and as broadcast entertainment, most visibly in the televised game show format that has carried the word into everyday use. The term itself is old, with printed examples traceable to the late eighteenth century, though its exact origin remains disputed; a popular story crediting a Dublin theatre manager with coining the word in 1791 is widely repeated but not supported by the historical evidence. Across its many settings, the format's core structure, a poser and a question, a respondent and an answer, has stayed constant even as the venues have changed from classroom to broadcast studio to pub night.
