Joking Hazard

Joking Hazard is a card game published in 2016 that adapts the dark and irreverent stick figure humor of the Cyanide and Happiness webcomic, created by Kris Wilson, Rob DenBleyker, Matt Melvin and Dave McElfatrick, into a party card game format. Players use cards printed with individual comic panels to build a three panel strip in front of the group, competing to produce the most humorous or shocking combination each round, in the tradition of fill in the blank party card games. Its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign raised more than 3.2 million US dollars, making it, at the time, the second most funded card game in Kickstarter's history, reflecting the existing popularity of the Cyanide and Happiness webcomic among backers. The comic launched in January 2005 and is published daily on the site explosm.net, built on stick figure artwork paired with humor described as graphic, dark and often surreal, covering controversial subjects such as abortion, suicide and violence, and that tone carries directly into how the game's panel combinations are meant to land. The game's success helped prompt further Cyanide and Happiness card and video game adaptations in the years that followed, including Trial by Trolley in 2020.
