Crossword

A crossword is a word game played on a grid of black and white squares, where solvers fill in words or phrases that cross each other horizontally and vertically, each entry matched to a corresponding numbered clue. Puzzles resembling the modern crossword were popularized by the New York World newspaper in the 1910s; journalist Arthur Wynne, born in Liverpool, published a diamond-shaped word-cross puzzle in the New York World on December 21, 1913, an example widely cited as the first crossword. The puzzle became a regular weekly feature in that paper and spread to other newspapers, reaching the Pittsburgh Press by 1916 and the Boston Globe by 1917.
