Stratomic is a chess variant invented by Robert Montay-Marsais in 1972 that introduces nuclear weaponry into the game of chess. It is played on an enlarged ten-by-ten board rather than the standard eight-by-eight, and each side has all the usual chess pieces plus two additional pawns and two special nuclear pieces representing missiles. The defining mechanic is the missile launch: a player can activate a nuclear piece to destroy every non-king piece on a targeted square and the squares surrounding it, after which the missile itself is removed from play as part of the detonation. This blends the positional and tactical play of standard chess with a single dramatic area-of-effect weapon that can reshape the board in one move. As with standard chess, Stratomic is designed for two players; no commercial publisher or manufacturer for the variant is recorded.
