Stratego: Legends

Stratego: Legends is a fantasy strategy board game published by Avalon Hill in 1999 and discontinued in 2004, set in a mythical realm called the Shattered Lands. Two players, one commanding the forces of good and the other the forces of evil, arrange armies of pieces that are shuffled randomly rather than placed by the player, since every piece in this variant carries its own unique innate ability, action, ability and death curse rather than only a handful of ranks having special powers as in the original Stratego. Combat follows the parent game's convention: when two pieces meet, the higher numbered piece prevails, and identical ranks eliminate each other, but the terrain squares on the board can shift a piece's effective strength. The goal is to destroy the opponent's castle, and a player who cannot move any surviving piece loses outright. The added complexity of hidden individual powers, memorized rather than deduced from a fixed rank chart, set the game apart from mainline Stratego editions of the same era.
