Chesquerque

Chess-Family War Games

Chesquerque is a chess variant invented by George R. Dekle Sr. in 1986 that blends the piece movement of chess with the board geometry of alquerque, an ancient point-to-point strategy game. Rather than using chess's familiar grid of squares, Chesquerque is played on a board built from four alquerque boards joined together into one larger square, producing a nine-by-nine grid of eighty-one intersection points. As in alquerque and games like xiangqi, pieces sit on the points themselves and move along the lines connecting them, rather than occupying squares. This point-and-line structure changes how chess pieces relate to each other spatially compared to a standard chessboard, giving experienced chess players a familiar piece set to reason with inside an unfamiliar board geometry.
