Cafe International is a tile laying board game created by Rudi Hoffmann and first published in 1989, the year it won Germany's Spiel des Jahres award for game of the year. Two to four players build a shared cafe floor by placing square tiles, each printed with figures representing patrons of different nationalities seated at little tables, extending rows and columns of matching or contrasting figures to score points. The game was released by several publishers over the years, including Mattel, Relaxx and Amigo, reflecting its long commercial life after its award winning debut. Its theme, showing many nationalities seated together at the same cafe, was notable for its era, and its straightforward tile placement rules helped it reach a wide family audience beyond dedicated hobby gamers.
