Displacement and Capture Games

Fox games are a family of asymmetric board games for two players in which one player, taking the role of a fox or wolf, tries to capture the opposing pieces, usually representing geese or sheep, while the second player tries to move those pieces to either trap the fox so it cannot move or reach a set destination on the board. Known regional forms include Fuchs und Ganse in Germany, Bagh-chal in Nepal and Ravspel in Sweden, and the family is documented from at least the fourteenth century in the Old Norse variant Halatafl, described in the Grettis saga. The English game was popular enough in the nineteenth century to reportedly be a favorite of Queen Victoria under the name Fox and Geese.
