Peg solitaire

Displacement and Capture Games

Peg solitaire is a single-player board game in which pegs or marbles are jumped over one another and removed from a grid of holes, with the goal of leaving as few pegs as possible, ideally just one, ending in the board's center hole. A valid move jumps a peg orthogonally over an adjacent peg into an empty hole two spaces away, removing the peg that was jumped. The game is documented from the court of Louis XIV, with the August 1697 issue of the French magazine Mercure galant describing its board, rules and sample problems, one of the earliest known written references to it. It is played on boards of varying shapes, most commonly a cross-shaped 33-hole board, and versions using marbles in indented boards go by names including solo noble and marble solitaire. In Britain the game is simply called solitaire, while American usage prefers peg solitaire to distinguish it from card solitaire games.
