Ohajiki

Dexterity and Physical Skill Games

Ohajiki is a traditional Japanese children's game that plays much like marbles but uses small, flat, coin-shaped pieces instead of round ones. The pieces themselves are also called ohajiki, and modern sets are typically made of glass or plastic, though in earlier times players used materials such as seashells, pebbles, or Go stones. The game centers on flicking one piece across a flat surface to strike others, and it is traditionally considered a game for girls, passed down as part of everyday Japanese childhood culture rather than taught through formal instruction. Its long history is reflected in the range of materials once used for the pieces, from natural objects like shells and stones to the manufactured glass and plastic counters common today.
