Marbles refers to a broad family of traditional children's games played with small round balls, traditionally of clay, stone or glass, in which players typically shoot one marble at others using a flick of the thumb, aiming to knock opponents' marbles out of a drawn ring or to hit a target marble. Games played with small round objects of this kind are documented from ancient Egypt and the classical Mediterranean world onward, and countless regional variants with different rules for shooting, ring shape and scoring have developed across cultures, with glass marbles becoming the standard playing piece after industrial glass-making made them cheap to produce in the nineteenth century.
