Kubb

Kubb is a Swedish lawn game in which players attempt to knock over an opponent's wooden blocks, called kubbar, by throwing wooden batons known as kastpinnar, before finally toppling the taller central block called the king. The game is played in two teams, which may consist of a single player each or larger groups, on a rectangular pitch that can be laid out on grass, sand, concrete, snow or ice. Historical documentation traces kubb to the Swedish island of Gotland, where it had become obscure by around 1912 before being recorded again by 1931; it experienced a revival as a local pastime during the 1980s and has since spread internationally as a popular outdoor recreational and tournament game. A match can last anywhere from about five minutes to well over an hour depending on the players' skill and the specific house rules in use, and the combination of throwing accuracy familiar from horseshoes with the pin-toppling objective familiar from bowling has helped the game find enthusiasts well beyond Scandinavia.
