Shove ha'penny

Shove ha'penny is a traditional English pub game belonging to the shuffleboard family, played predominantly in the United Kingdom by two players or two teams who take alternating turns sliding coins or discs across a smooth, rectangular board. The board is marked with parallel horizontal lines dividing its playing surface into nine numbered scoring areas known as beds, and traditional sets use five old British halfpenny coins, an obsolete pre-decimal denomination roughly one inch across, though similarly sized modern coins or metal discs are commonly substituted today. A player rests a coin at the board's edge and shoves it forward with the heel of the hand, and any coin that comes to rest entirely within a bed, clear of both bounding lines, scores a point toward that bed; the first side to record three chalked points in every one of the nine beds wins the game, though a bed's marks reset to the opponent's favor once a side completes three in it. Regional variation is strong, and in parts of southern England, including Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire, boards are traditionally cut from slate and dusted with powdered chalk or arrowroot to keep the sliding surface fast and even.
