Hoop rolling, also called hoop trundling, is both a sport and a children's game in which a large hoop is rolled along the ground, generally propelled and guided by an object such as a stick wielded by the player. The basic aim is to keep the hoop rolling upright for as long as possible, or to perform various tricks with it while it is in motion. The activity has been documented since antiquity across Africa, Asia and Europe, with the earliest known records coming from ancient China in Asia and ancient Greece in Europe, making it one of the most widely dispersed traditional target games across otherwise unconnected ancient societies. Its long independent history in multiple civilizations, rather than a single point of invention, has made it a frequently cited example of a simple, low-equipment physical pastime that recurs across world cultures.
