Egg dance

An egg dance is a traditional European party and dexterity game in which real eggs are set out on the ground or floor and participants attempt to dance or move among them while breaking as few as possible. The custom grew out of pagan spring rites where the egg stood for rebirth, later folded into Christian Easter celebration. The earliest well documented instance took place at the 1498 Easter Monday wedding of Margaret of Austria and Philibert of Savoy, and variants recorded since include dancing blindfolded to hornpipe music and rolling a single egg from a bowl while staying inside a chalked boundary, a form depicted in Pieter Aertsen's 1552 painting of the same custom.
