Valentin Mankin

Valentin Grigoryevich Mankin was a Soviet and Ukrainian sailor born August 19, 1938, in Kyiv, who died June 1, 2014, in Viareggio, Italy. A three time Olympic gold medalist, he remains the only sailor in Olympic history to win gold medals in three different boat classes, taking the Finn class in 1968 in Mexico City, the Tempest class in 1972 in Munich, and the Star class in 1980 in Moscow at age 41, and he also won a Tempest silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Games. He later moved to Italy, serving as technical director and coach for the Italian Sailing Federation and founding an Olympic training center in Livorno.
