Hicham El Guerrouj is a Moroccan former middle distance runner, born in 1974, who holds the current world record in the 1500 metres and previously held world records in the mile and 2000 metres. At the 2004 Athens Olympics he became the first man since Paavo Nurmi in 1924 to win gold medals in both the 1500 metres and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games, having also won 1500 metre silver at the 2000 Sydney Games. He won four consecutive world championship titles in the 1500 metres, in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003, recorded six of the ten fastest 1500 metre performances in history, and was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame in 2014.
