Byun Sangil is a South Korean professional Go player born on January 14, 1997, holding 9 dan rank with the Korea Baduk Association. He turned professional in 2012 at age fifteen and led his team, Posco Chemtech, to victory in the Korean Baduk League in 2018, earning league MVP honors with a 10-4 regular season record. He won the Guksu Mountains International Baduk Championship in 2021, defeating Shin Jinseo in the final, the Crown Haitai Cup in 2022, a gold medal with the South Korean men's team at the 2022 Asian Games, and his first major international title at the 2023 Chunlan Cup with a two-game sweep of Li Xuanhao, followed by a GS Caltex Cup win the same year and the 29th LG Cup World Baduk Championship in 2025.
