Oswald Jacoby was an American contract bridge player and author who lived from 1902 to 1984. He is regarded as one of the greatest bridge players in history and helped popularize widely used bidding conventions such as Jacoby transfers. Beyond bridge he excelled across other games, winning the World Backgammon Championship in 1972 and writing books on gin rummy, canasta and poker, and his mathematical ability was strong enough that he later lectured on probability at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
