Rock climbing is a sport in which participants climb natural rock formations or artificial climbing walls, testing strength, technique, endurance and mental control. Its competitive disciplines include lead climbing, bouldering and speed climbing, and it became a medal event at the Olympic Games at the Tokyo 2020 Games under the umbrella term sport climbing.

Origin YearHaskett Smith's June 1886 ascent of Napes Needle in the English Lake District is thought by some to mark the origins of rock climbing as a sport in its own right, but the source frames this for England only and other accounts date mountaineering and rock ascents earlier, so 1886 is one accepted answer and not a settled worldwide founding year. The main types of rock climbing can trace their origins to late 19th-century Europe, with bouldering in Fontainebleau, big wall climbing in the Dolomites, and single-pitch climbing in both the Lake District and in Saxony.
