Joel Sherman, nicknamed GI Joel, is an American professional Scrabble player born in 1962 in the Bronx, New York. He won the World Scrabble Championship in 1997 in Washington, D.C., and also won the 1998 Brand's Crossword Game King's Cup, the 2002 National Scrabble Championship and the 2018 North American Scrabble Championship. Since turning professional in 1988 he has played roughly 4,750 tournament games with a win rate near 64 percent, holds the North American record for the highest single tournament game score at 803 points, and is featured in Stefan Fatsis's book Word Freak and the documentary Word Wars.
