Vasily Alexeyev was a Soviet super-heavyweight weightlifter who won Olympic gold medals in 1972 and 1976 and set more than eighty official world records over his career, more than any other weightlifter in history. He was the first man to clean and jerk more than 500 pounds, a milestone that drew international attention beyond the sport of weightlifting itself. He later coached the Russian national weightlifting team after his competitive career ended.
