Waldemar Baszanowski was a Polish lightweight weightlifter who lived from 1935 to 2011 and won Olympic gold in the 67.5 kilogram category at both the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico City Games. He also won five World Championship gold medals, in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1969, plus five World Championship silvers, for a combined ten World and Olympic medals described as more than any weightlifter in history at the time, and he set 24 world records and 61 national records over his career. He carried the Polish flag at three Olympic Games, in 1964, 1968 and 1972, received the Polish Sportsperson of the Year award in 1969, and was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 1993.
