Sawao Kato is a Japanese former artistic gymnast, born in 1946, who won twelve Olympic medals between 1968 and 1976, eight of them gold, the most of any Japanese Olympian by gold medal count. He won the men's all-around title at both the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich Olympics, added floor exercise gold in 1968 and parallel bars gold in 1972 and 1976, and helped Japan's men's team win Olympic team gold in 1968, 1972 and 1976. He retired from competition in 1977, was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2001, and later became a professor emeritus at the University of Tsukuba.
