Li Ning

Gymnastics and Strength Sports

Li Ning is a Chinese former artistic gymnast born March 10, 1963, in Liuzhou, Guangxi, who became the most decorated Chinese athlete at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, China's first Olympics, winning three gold medals in floor exercise, pommel horse and rings plus two silver and one bronze. He won eleven World Artistic Gymnastics Championships medals over his career, including gold in rings in 1985, and earned the nickname Prince of Gymnastics after taking six of seven medals at the 1982 World Cup. After retiring in 1988 he founded the sportswear company Li-Ning in 1990, was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2000 as its first Chinese honoree, and lit the Olympic cauldron at the 2008 Beijing opening ceremony.
