Jon Pall Sigmarsson was an Icelandic strength athlete who lived from 1960 to 1993 and became the first man to win the World's Strongest Man title four times, in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990, along with two Europe's Strongest Man titles and five World Muscle Power Championships, the only man to win that event five times. He set 24 world records over his career, won Iceland's Sportsperson of the Year award in 1981, and is credited with establishing Iceland's dominance in strength sports; he was posthumously inducted into the World's Strongest Man Hall of Fame in 2012. He died from an aortic rupture while deadlifting at his gym, a result of a congenital heart condition.
