Barry David Sanders is an American former professional football running back, born in 1968, who played 10 seasons for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League after an All-American college career at Oklahoma State, where his 1988 season of 2,628 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns in 11 games won him the Heisman Trophy. He led the NFL in rushing yards four times and in rushing touchdowns once, won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 1989 and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award in 1994, and shared the 1997 NFL Most Valuable Player award after rushing for 2,053 yards that season. Standing 5 feet 8 inches tall, he is widely considered one of the most elusive runners and one of the greatest running backs in NFL history.
