Terence Frederick Venables (6 January 1943 to 25 November 2023), often called "El Tel", was an English football player and manager who played for clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers and won two caps for England. As a manager he won the Second Division with Crystal Palace in 1979, reached the 1982 FA Cup Final with Queens Park Rangers and won the Second Division in 1983. With Barcelona he won La Liga in 1985 and reached the 1986 European Cup Final, and he guided Tottenham Hotspur to victory in the 1991 FA Cup Final. He also managed Middlesbrough and Leeds United, led the England national team from 1994 to 1996, reaching the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championships, and managed Australia from 1996 to 1998. His tactical style was modern and innovative against the rigid style then dominant in English football. With writer Gordon Williams he co-authored novels under the joint pseudonym "P.B. Yuill".
