James Nathaniel Brown was an American professional football player, civil rights activist and actor who lived from 1936 to 2023 and played fullback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League from 1957 to 1965, widely considered one of the greatest running backs and greatest players in NFL history. He was selected to a Pro Bowl and All-Pro team every season of his career, was named the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player three times, won an NFL championship with the Browns in 1964, and led the league in rushing yards in eight of his nine seasons. He carried the ball 2,359 times for 12,312 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns, all records at his retirement, and remains the only NFL player to average over 100 rushing yards per game for a career; he is also widely considered one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time.
