Stephen Roche is an Irish former professional road racing cyclist whose peak season came in 1987, when he won the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the World Road Race Championship in the same year, a feat known as the Triple Crown that only two other cyclists, Eddy Merckx and Tadej Pogacar, have achieved. He won the 1987 Tour de France by 40 seconds and also won Paris-Nice in 1981 as a first year professional and the Tour de Romandie three times. Chronic knee injuries limited his success in Grand Tours after 1987, though he finished his career with 58 professional wins.
