Alexander Vinokourov is a Kazakhstani former professional road cyclist born September 16, 1973, in Petropavl. He won the overall title at the 2006 Vuelta a Espana, took Olympic gold in the men's road race at the 2012 London Games after winning silver at the 2000 Sydney Games, and won two editions of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege monument classic, in 2005 and 2010, plus stage wins at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana. His career included a one-year suspension after testing positive for blood doping during the 2007 Tour de France, after which his Astana team withdrew from the race, though he returned to competition and continued racing through his Olympic-winning 2012 season before retiring to become general manager of the Astana team.
