FAQs

Why is Jon Jones's only professional loss disputed?

A 2009 disqualification for illegal elbows against Matt Hamill is disputed by UFC president Dana White.

Jon Jones's only professional loss came on December 5, 2009, against Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale. Jones was disqualified for using illegal 12 to 6 elbows, a downward elbow strike that the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts prohibited. Hamill could not continue because of a dislocated shoulder. UFC president Dana White said the referee should have ruled the bout a no contest rather than a disqualification, and in 2019 he said he was still trying to have the Nevada State Athletic Commission change the result to a no contest.
