Tigran Vardani Petrosian was a Soviet Armenian chess grandmaster who became the ninth World Chess Champion, holding the title from 1963 to 1969. Nicknamed Iron Tigran for his almost impenetrable defensive playing style, which placed safety above all else at the board, he is often credited with popularizing chess in Armenia.
