Noel Furlong, born John James Furlong on Christmas Day 1937 in Dublin, built his fortune in the Irish carpet trade through his company Furlong Flooring before turning to poker as an amateur in 1984. Playing largely for enjoyment rather than as a professional, he entered the 1999 World Series of Poker Main Event and defeated Alan Goehring heads up to win the title and its one million dollar prize at the age of 61. The win made him one of the oldest Main Event champions in tournament history and one of only a handful of Irish players ever to reach the biggest stage in poker. Furlong helped draw a wave of European recreational players toward the Las Vegas tournament in the years that followed.
