Juan Carlos Mortensen was born in Ambato, Ecuador, in 1972 to parents of Danish descent, and moved from Spain to the United States in the late 1990s to pursue poker professionally. In 2001 he won the World Series of Poker Main Event, defeating a field of 613 players to claim the 1.5 million dollar first prize and becoming the first South American ever to win the title. He went on to add multiple World Poker Tour championships to his record over the following decade, cementing a reputation as one of the most consistent tournament players of his generation. Mortensen was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2016 in recognition of his sustained international success.
