Deshabandu Muttiah Muralitharan is a Sri Lankan former professional cricketer, born in 1972, who is the only bowler in history to take 800 Test wickets and has taken more wickets in international cricket than any other bowler, averaging over six wickets per Test match. He was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the team that shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy with India, and he held the International Cricket Council's number one ranking for Test bowlers for a record 1,711 days across 214 Tests. His unusual bowling action, caused by a congenitally bent arm, drew repeated challenges from umpires and critics but was cleared by the International Cricket Council after biomechanical analysis in 1996 and again in 1999, and he overtook Shane Warne as Test cricket's leading wicket taker on 3 December 2007.
