Tamas Darnyi

Tamas Darnyi is a Hungarian competitive swimmer, born June 3, 1967, in Budapest, who specialized in individual medley events and is regarded as one of the discipline's greatest practitioners. He won four Olympic gold medals across two Games, taking both the 200 meter and 400 meter individual medley at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and repeating that double at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He won gold medals in both medley distances at the 1986 and 1991 World Championships, multiple European Championship titles in 1985, 1987 and 1989, and a European title in the 200 meter butterfly. He was the first swimmer to swim the long course 200 meter medley in under two minutes, remained unbeaten in individual medley events from 1985 until his 1993 retirement, and was named Male World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World in 1987 and 1991.
