Dezso Gyarmati was a Hungarian water polo player and later coach who lived from 1927 to 2013 and is widely considered the greatest water polo player of the twentieth century. He won three Olympic gold medals as a player, in 1952, 1956 and 1964, plus a silver in 1948 and a bronze in 1960, competing across five consecutive Olympic Games, and he was part of Hungary's legendary 1956 Melbourne team that defeated the Soviet Union in the politically charged Blood in the Water match shortly after the Hungarian Revolution.
