Kristin Otto

Kristin Otto is a former East German competitive swimmer, born February 7, 1966, in Leipzig, who competed across freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events. She became the first woman to win six gold medals at a single Olympic Games, at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and held world records in the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyle long course events. In 1983, at a meet at Indiana University, she became the first woman to swim the short course 100 meter backstroke in under a minute. She won multiple World Championship and European Championship titles, was named Female World Swimmer of the Year three times, in 1984, 1986 and 1988, and retired from competitive swimming in 1989.
