Kornelia Ender

Kornelia Ender is a former East German competitive swimmer, born October 25, 1958, in Plauen, who specialized in freestyle, butterfly and medley events. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics she became the first woman swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Olympic Games, all in world record times, taking the 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly and 4x100 meter medley relay. She had already won three silver medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics as a 13 year old, and over her career set 32 individual world records and won eight gold medals at World Championships and four at European Championships. Her achievements are complicated by East Germany's systematic doping program: team doctors administered steroids to athletes without their knowledge, and in 1991 Ender acknowledged receiving injections she was told would aid recovery, though she said she was not told what the substances were; she was banned from competition in 1977 after refusing a further steroid.
