Ian Thorpe is an Australian former competitive swimmer, nicknamed Thorpedo, who won five Olympic gold medals across the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games, specializing in freestyle events. He set numerous world records in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle during his career and became one of Australia's most prominent Olympic athletes at his home Games in Sydney. He retired from competitive swimming in 2006 while still in his early twenties.
