Blokus

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Blokus is an abstract strategy board game for two to four players, where players try to score points by occupying most of the board with pieces of their color. Created by French biophysicist Bernard Tavitian, the game was first released in France by Sekkoia in 2000 before Mattel acquired the rights in 2008 and brought it to a wider international audience. Each player's polyomino shaped pieces must touch only at the corners of previously placed pieces of the same color, a simple constraint that produces deep strategic tension as the shared square grid fills. Blokus has since appeared in numerous editions, including versions built for two, three or four players.
