Quoridor

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Quoridor is a two- or four-player abstract strategy board game designed by Mirko Marchesi and published by the French game company Gigamic, first released in 1997. Played on a nine-by-nine grid, each player controls a single pawn that starts on one edge of the board and must be the first to reach the opposite edge. On a turn a player either moves their pawn one space or places one of a limited number of walls across the grid to slow an opponent's progress, without ever fully blocking any player's path to their goal. The game involves no dice or chance, relying purely on spatial planning, and a typical match lasts fifteen to twenty five minutes. It won the Mensa Mind Game award in its debut year along with Game of the Year honors in the United States, France, Canada and Belgium.
