Pylos (board game)

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Pylos is an abstract strategy board game invented by David G. Royffe and published by the French company Gigamic. Royffe conceived the concept in 1964 using snooker balls, originally calling it Elevation, before it was renamed Pyraos and finally Pylos ahead of its 1994 release at the Essen game fair in Germany. Two players place colored balls into a 4 by 4 grid of 16 indentations, building upward in layers. When four pieces of the same color form a square, a player may stack a piece from their reserve on top, and completed same-colored squares let a player reclaim their own pieces back into reserve. The game is won by whoever places the last piece on the pyramid's top level, or by leaving the opponent with no legal move.
