Space shogi

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Space shogi is a three-dimensional variant of the Japanese strategy game shogi, invented by the American games designer George R. Dekle Sr. in 1987. The playing space consists of nine standard 9x9 shogi boards stacked vertically, giving each of the two players' pieces freedom to move through three dimensions rather than across a single flat board. Every other element of standard shogi is retained, including piece drops, promotion zones and the checkmate victory condition, so the variant multiplies shogi's tactical complexity without discarding its established rules. The game was documented in World Game Review issue 10, edited by Michael Keller, a periodical devoted to cataloguing invented and variant abstract strategy games, which remains the primary published record of Dekle's design.
