Pegity

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Pegity, originally sold as Peg'ity, is an abstract strategy board game that Parker Brothers first released in 1925 and kept in production into the 1960s. Two to four players take turns pushing colored pegs into a pegboard, typically laid out as a sixteen by sixteen grid of holes, trying to be the first to connect five of their own pegs in an unbroken line running horizontally, vertically or diagonally while also blocking rivals from completing their own line of five. A full game usually takes around twenty minutes and the rules are simple enough for players twelve and up, with the publisher also printing alternate board patterns meant for younger children. Because the underlying contest, claiming a straight line of markers before an opponent does while also disrupting the opponent's own line, is the same core idea that Connect Four would use decades later with a vertical gravity twist, Pegity is often cited as an early ancestor of that much later, more famous game, even though the two were produced by unrelated companies decades apart.
