Breakthrough is a two-player abstract strategy board game invented by Dan Troyka in 2000. Players alternate moving rows of pawn-like pieces across a checkerboard-style grid, aiming to be the first to advance a single piece all the way to the opposing back row. The game was originally designed for a 7x7 board before an 8x8 version was adopted, and it won the 2001 8x8 Game Design Competition judged by the abstract games community. It was first made available to players as a file for the Zillions of Games general game-playing software rather than through a conventional board game publisher, reflecting its origin among computer-assisted abstract game designers.
