Batoo is a Korean variant of the board game Go, played entirely online rather than on a physical board. Its name blends the Korean words baduk, meaning Go, and juntoo, meaning battle. The game launched in November 2008 and is typically played on an eleven by eleven grid, though thirteen by thirteen boards also exist. Before play begins each side places three stones, and the board carries plus point and minus point spots that add or subtract five points when captured, a scoring twist not found in traditional Go. Batoo also introduces a hidden stone mechanic: one stone that stays invisible to the opponent until it is revealed later in the game, adding a layer of bluffing to the normally full information game of Go. As of April 2021 games were run through a dedicated online server.
